Accidentally Like A Martyr

The Thomas White cover of ‘Accidentally Like A Martyr’ by Warren Zevon was played right at the start of Dermot O’Leary’s show on 23rd Jan. Dermot remembers a 2007 ESP interview: “he went to Chicago on the way to South By Southwest and had lobster while he was there. What possible reason, you’re 2000 miles away from the ocean, no good’s ever going to come from that. So when he got there, bless him he was doing the session and he kept running out to be sick. He was a trooper, like a marine that guy”

Silent To The Dark from that session is on The Saturday Sessions album – some choice dialogue from their interview at the time: Thomas: Is it alright to get a bit of air or something in here? (Dermot in the background: oh my god, of course it’s alright) Thomas: I feel a bit hot. Alex: Take your bloody suit off. Thomas: Let’s just get through it.

There’s a different version of the original Warren Zevon song on youtube

Lyrics to the version Thomas covered:

The phone don’t ring, no no
And the sun refused to shine
Never thought I’d have to pay so dearly
For what was already mine
For such a long, long time

We made mad love
Shadow love
Random love
And abandoned love
Accidentally like a martyr
The hurt gets worse and the heart gets harder

The days fly by
Should have done, should have done, we all sigh
Never thought I’d ever be so lonely
For such a long, long time
Time out of mind

We made mad love
Shadow love
Random love
And abandoned love
Accidentally like a martyr
The hurt gets worse and the heart gets harder
